Things to do with the family this summer
"I'm bored ... what shall we do?" So might begin your challenge to find entertainment for all. Armed with nothing more than a picnic basket you could have an enjoyable day out following one of the suggestions below.
The best way to beat the crunch and have a fun day out is to visit the countryside. Our precious environment and the fantastic wide open spaces of Essex give yet another benefit - it costs nothing but gives lots in return. Why not take the children to one of the many nature reserves run by the Essex Wildlife Trust? Abberton Reservoir for example is one of the major places for bird watching with five hides. Many events organised will not only entertain all but educate aswell. At Fingrinhoe Wick you can follow nature trails, watch bird hides and enjoy at the same time the stunning estuary views.
Essex has more than 14 country parks offerering a range of activities and events. As most of them are managed by local authorities entry is free. You might have to pay a minimal parking fee.
Cudmore Grove Country Park has an attractive long sandy beach adjoining a large area of clifftop, grassland and marshes ideal for walks and picnics. High Woods Country Park located in the centre of Colchester consist of over 300 acres of grassland, woodland and wetland. Here you can walk, cycle even fish to your hearts content. A variety of events for all ages ensure there is always something interesting going on. Lee Valley Country Park is a stretch of over 26 miles along the River Lee offering a range of things to do! Whether you like walking, wildlife, birds, gardens, sport, kids' activities or boat trips there is something for you.
If you fancy a change or if the weather is not great why not visit one of the many museums. Most have either a garden or a playground attached so your packed picknic basket will came in handy very soon. Chelmsford Museum has a numer of permanent displays including The Story Of Chelmsford, Domestic Life, Art Collections and Natural History. A regular calendar of events and large playground and picnic area ensure there is plenty to entertain all. Entry to the Natural History Museum, the Hollytrees Museum and the Tymperleys Clock Museum in Colchester is also free. So what better way to spend the day feeding the mind and then relaxing in Colchester Castle Park quelching the appetite after all that learning!
